Trip to Zadar in December
If you want to experience a warmer holidays during the freezing cold of Europe in December, then Croatia is a great place to enjoy a warmer vacation. Due to the Mediterranean climate, Croatia is sun kissed all along the year, offering its visitors a hot and sunny weather during summer and relatively mild weather in winter. Although snow is the last thing that comes to your mind when you think of Croatia, yet, snowy landscapes are quite common. This time I headed towards Zadar, a charming city of Croatia, temperatures warmer than most of Europe and off-season prices on accommodation. The season really makes a big difference in Croatia. In December you will find the seaside is serene, literally no sounds but lapping waves and chatty gulls.
Zadar is an old town and you will certainly enjoy the peace of roaming around on the old town’s burnished marble streets as a pedestrian. While wandering you will immerse yourself in the feel of the weathered pastel buildings. Looks like each of these old buildings have some stories to tell their visitors. The city is full of the towers and churches, city walls and gates with famous Roman lion-adorned facades.
The best tourist attraction in Zadar is the Sea Organ. It’s a musical magic in the Adriatic sea. Okay, actually the magic happens due to the music like sound which comes from the waves. If you look down at the marble steps which lead toward the sea, you’ll notice the 35 tubular tunnels. The waves push air through these tunnels and the sound pops-up automatically helping the waves create this beautiful music, popularly called, Riva. You will find the Sea Organ is busiest during the sunset, with photographers and tourists waiting to see one of the spectacular sunsets. You will experience probably one of the most amazing solar powers lighting art just after the sunset, exploding an array of brightly color lights with changing hues. Consists of multi layer glass plates (three hundreds) in the shape of a circle with 22 meters in diameter, The Greeting to the Sun are conceived as a spatial representation. It is in the shape of an amphitheatre and stone blocks represent all Solar System planets with their orbits.
My plan for one of my day’s in Zadar had been to wake up early and visit Paklenica National Park. National parks in Croatia are open all around the year and the entry fee in winter is usually lower. As there are fewer crowds during winter, so you can truly enjoy the natural splendor. Located just 40 kilometers from Zadar, Paklenica National Park is Croatia’s second oldest national park behind Northern Dalmatia. Established in 1949, Paklenica National Park is a hiker’s paradise because there are climbs available for all levels of experience. You will notice the exotic view of canyons made with dolomite limestone from Paklenica National Park. They are well known as Velika Paklenica & Mala Paklenica in the Velebit mountain. This is Croatia’s Alpine Vista. On that clear, sunny day Velebit was absolutely looked like a Hollywood backdrop.
I found winter in Croatia is the best season for relaxing and enjoying a more intimate experience in the country. Come and experience Croatia in winter!
